TSL Jewellry Review

TSL Jewellry – A Review

Our Rating 3.8 out of 5.

Compare TSL Jewellry with James Allen.

TSL is a fairly decent jewelry store to visit, but there is something to be wary off, they do not sell only GIA certified diamonds. This is rare in Hong Kong, as thankfully, most jewelers there do sell their diamonds, or at least some of their diamonds, with GIA certifications. This is already a step down from what you should expect at a jewelry store, but to be fair, TSL does offer some nice diamonds and do offer customers a good experience in-store, with friendly staff and a good selection.

James Allen

A Brief History

TSL was founded by Mr. Tse Sui Luen, from where the name TSL comes from, in the 1960s. He is considered a Hong Kong jewelry legend, and with this, he has grown TSL to one of the largest jewelers in Asia. With headquarters in Hong Kong, the company operates more than 400 jewelry boutiques in over 110 cities in Asia.

TSL functions as a retailer, jewelry designer, trader, and manufacturer, which allows the company to offer wholesaling, custom designs and ready to buy pieces. The company has also gone on to win over 60 jewelry design awards.

There are over 25 TSL boutiques in Hong Kong, and 2 in Macau, and it is very easy to find a TSL store in either of these locations.

What TSL Offer

The TSL stores offer customers a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of busy Hong Kong, with the interiors being light and airy, with a very calming presence.

The staff in the stores also works towards making it a memorable and pleasurable experience, being patient, friendly and quite helpful. While the experience in-store from the sales assistant and the ambiance isn’t as premium as some higher-end stores, it is definitely more enjoyable than numerous other physical retailers.

One thing that makes TSL stand out for the wrong reasons is the certifications they use for their diamonds. In Hong Kong, it is extremely common to find jewelers selling GIA certified diamonds, and while TSL does advertise to sell GIA certified diamonds, their diamonds actually come with IGI grading reports instead. For those who know a thing or two about diamonds, this is a major setback as GIA is regarded as the leading authority for diamond grading worldwide. However, in some stores, you might be lucky enough to find diamonds with GIA certifications, but you will need to ask for these.

What Makes TSL Stand Out?

Staff – The staff at TSL are very pleasant to deal with. They see that every need of the customer is met, and go the extra mile to ensure that the customer is shown what they want. They are friendly, helpful and know enough about diamonds to help the customer with the purchasing process.

Diamonds – The diamonds sold at TSL are of stunning quality, and the selection they offer is quite extensive as well. It would be easy for a customer to pick out the perfect diamond for themselves in a store or online.

Certification – While it is definitely a setback that TSL sells IGI diamonds, some come with GIA certifications, you will just need to ask the sales assistant to show you the diamonds that only have GIA certifications, to be sure of the qualities of the stone.

TSL Pricing

The prices at TSL are high, but thankfully not as high as some other retailers in Hong Kong. It would be impossible for a retailer as large as TSL to match the prices of diamonds sold online at James Allen or Blue Nile, as their overheads are just too large.

If you had to compare a similar diamond from TSL to a diamond from James Allen, there will be roughly a 30% price increase, sometimes more and sometimes less. This does not seem like much as first, but when you consider you are paying thousands for a diamond and engagement ring, this difference adds up very quickly to be almost unaffordable.

Custom Orders

TSL offers customers the chance to pair their favorite diamond found in-store or online with one of their engagement ring settings from a special collection. This diamond is then matched and set into the setting, completing a ring that is unique and personalized.

Website Ease of Use

The TSL website is simple and left quite plain. This can be good if done right, but to be fair, the website is a bit drab. There is some nice imagery, but as a whole, it seems quite outdated.

The good part of it all is that it is fairly easy to find an engagement ring, as all the different categories are broken down quite easily to navigate through.

There are not too many rings to browse through, so filtering is not too much of an issue. When viewing a ring, there is unfortunately only one picture available, but there is a decent amount of information offered, and some extra education on the 4C’s, to help customers make a more informed decision.

To help make the choice easier, there is a page on the site dedicated to customer service, which is always good to read up on before purchasing from a store.

Customer Service

TSL has won numerous awards for their customer service, so it is safe to say that they put a lot of work into making their customers happy. This is found online and does filter through to the stores, which offer a pleasant experience.

Returns – Customers can return items in the original condition to a TSL store in the set amount of time allowed for returns.

Craftsmanship – TSL employs craftsmen who have years of experience in the industry to help repaired and create all pieces of jewelry from the store.

TSL Financing Options

Customers who are looking for financing from TSL will have to inquire about this in a store or use third-party financing for their purchase.

Why You Should Choose TSL

  • Locations found easily within Hong Kong
  • Some diamonds are sold with GIA certification
  • Really nice diamonds sold both in-store and online

TSL – Not Your Go-To Store

While TSL does sell some stunning diamonds, and engagement rings to match, the fact that only some of their stones are sold with GIA certification brings them down a notch. The experience in-store offered by the ambiance and the staff is pleasant, but the premium prices you can expect to pay do not make up for it.

Your money would be better spent online at James Allen or Blue Nile, where you will find a gorgeous diamond and engagement ring at a much lower price.
